January 15 – First apparition of Our Lady of the Poor in Banneux (Belgium, 1933)

I am the Virgin of the Poor

The Shrine of Our Lady of Banneux, Belgium, where Mary introduced herself as "Our Lady of the Poor," is a popular place of prayer that draws more than 600,000 pilgrims every year. These apparitions were officially approved by the Church in 1949.

On Sunday evening, January 15, 1933, Our Lady appeared in the garden of Beco’s small house for the first time. She motioned to Mariette with her hand, but Mariette’s mother forbade her to go out.

On Wednesday, January 18th, Mariette was in the garden praying on her knees. Suddenly, Mariette left the garden and went out to the road where the Lady called her. On the way to Mary, Mariette went down on her knees twice. A third time, she knelt near a ditch, in front of a puddle of water from the spring. The Lady spoke to her, “Put your hands in the water.” Mariette did so and repeated what the Lady said to her, “This source is reserved for me.”

On Thursday, January 19th, the weather was very bad. Mariette was on her knees on the path. The Lady appeared to her. Mariette asked her, “Who are you, beautiful Lady?” Mary replied, “I am the Virgin of the Poor.” The Virgin led the child to the spring. Mariette questioned her again, “Beautiful Lady, you told me yesterday: this spring is reserved for me. Why for me?” Mariette said to herself, thinking that the spring was especially for her. With a smile, the Virgin answered, “This spring is reserved for all Nations… to relieve the sick.” - “Thank you, thank you!” said Mariette. The Virgin continued, “I will pray for you. Goodbye.”
