May 15 – Madonna di Montenero (Italy, 1345)

After each Rosary the sky would clear

In May 1989, a small village of southern Italy was about to celebrate a big annual event—a festival in honor of two Christian martyrs who are the patron saints and protectors of their vineyards. This pilgrimage attracts people from the whole region.

An outdoor Mass and religious procession had been planned, and flowery arches filled the streets, but there were ominous dark clouds gathering overhead, and the barometric pressure was falling rapidly. Somehow the parish priest remained hopeful and serene.

As evening came, a parishioner observed: "Father, I believe that the devil has joined the party! Our festival is compromised.” “Maybe,” the priest replied, “but the good Lord might also join the party. Good evening to you and don’t forget to get your vocal cords ready to sing tomorrow so that they vibrate in the ears of the crowd!”

The next morning, to everyone’s surprise, the sun shone brightly! The outdoor Mass took place, and, in the evening, more than 2,000 people took part in the procession!

When it was over, the same parishioner commented: “Well, Father, your prediction came true, the good Lord did join the party!" To which the priest replied: “I told you so. I had promised my martyrs that I would have enough faith to move mountains. I finished my breviary last night around midnight, and the rain hadn’t stopped. So I knelt down to pray a Rosary. Afterwards, the rain lessened. I said a second Rosary, then went to the window, and the rain had stopped but it was still cloudy. So, I continued to pray. After each Rosary, it seemed to me that the Blessed Virgin was sweeping away the clouds. Around 3:30 am, the sky was blue, and this morning the sun was bright. Well, you know the rest!”
