Let's fight witchcraft by praying to the Virgin Mary!

There are divine weapons to fight witchcraft—a social and existential phenomenon in African communities. The Church has raised a corner of the veil on ways to battle against wizards and mystical practices. The topic was addressed at the end of the 7th International Symposium of the Catholic Missionary Institute of Abidjan (Ivory Coast), held from April 5-6, 2019, in Abidjan-Abobo, on the theme "The Christian Faith Against Witchcraft."

Several pastors, theologians, philosophers, Ivorian and African anthropologists led the discussions on the issue. Their conclusion was that the use of witchcraft in Africa had hard-to-measure and devastating effects on the continent's communities.

Bishop Dominique Guigbile, Bishop of Dapaong, Togo, made proposals based on the experiences of Jesus Christ and the scriptures: "First, we must focus on the faith in Jesus crucified, because the cross and faith go together. The second weapon Jesus used is the Word of God, and the third weapon is prayer. Jesus said that demons can only be expelled through prayer. Moreover, the saints, men of God and exorcists have testified that they were able to overcome trials through prayer. As for the prayer to the Virgin Mary, it is exceptionally powerful!"
