Battling cancer with Mary

Saint Zélie Martin (mother of Saint Therese of Lisieux, 1831-1877, canonized on October 18, 2015 by Pope Francis), frequently turned to Mary, "the Virgin with the Smile." She knew that the Mother of God is there with us through every family event; that she heals, consoles and strengthens those who invoke her when a serious condition like cancer occurs.

When Zélie discovered her breast cancer, after the first shock of the news, she chose to gradually enter the path of abandonment. As a wife and mother, she saw this trial as an extraordinary opportunity for inner renewal. Every moment brought her closer to Jesus.

Throughout her illness, she sought the intercession of Our Lady. She went to Lourdes to entrust her with her health. Back at home, understanding that the fruitfulness of her life meant entering into an even more total oblation to the Father, Zélie experienced a real sense of happiness, a true joy. Her days would now illuminate those around her, and the light of Heaven would take over the darkness.

Saint Zélie can become a friend and a precious help in living close to Jesus and Mary.
