March 24 – Our Lady of the Thorn (Châlons-sur-Marne, France, 1400) - Saint Catherine of Sweden (d. 1381)

Being a woman is not second best

Mary is given as an example of the perfect accomplishment of femininity. Through her, God shows women the special place reserved for them in the Church. Their share is that of love. And love is the very Being of God, because God IS Love!

There is nothing second best about being a woman. Saint John Paul II helps us to become aware of women’s specific mission: "Our time in particular awaits the manifestation of that "genius" which belongs to women, and which can ensure sensitivity for human beings in every circumstance: because they are human!!"

How could we not be reminded of Saint Therese of Lisieux? ... She would have liked to have other vocations—to be a soldier, priest, apostle, martyr! Then the Lord enlightened her with an inner light that brought her peace and joy: "Yes, I have found my place in the Church ... in the heart of the Church my Mother, I will be Love ... thus I shall be all things."

If the vocation of every human being is to love, the woman is responsible for it in a special way in the plan of God. She is the guardian of light and love.
