January 28 – Our Lady of the People (Italy, 1771)

Conversions increased

On January 28, 1840, the Blessed Virgin appeared to a novice of the Daughters of Charity, who was making her first retreat at the Mother House, located at 140, rue du Bac in Paris, France.

Sister Justine Bisqueyburu (1818-1903) was in prayer before the statue of the Virgin, when suddenly the Virgin Mary appeared to her. In her hands she held the Immaculate Heart, from which bright flames emerged. Several times, on the main feast days of the Blessed Virgin, the Sister was favored by the same apparition...

On September 8, 1840, the Blessed Virgin appeared again to Sister Justine. She held in her right hand the Immaculate Heart surmounted by flames, and, in the other, a piece of green cloth. On one side of the scapular was the image of Mary and on the reverse side “a Heart all ablaze with rays more dazzling than the sun and as transparent as crystal.” The heart, pierced with a sword, was surrounded by an inscription: "Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death."

Sister Justine understood that this new scapular would contribute to the conversion of those who do not have the faith and, above all, that it would grant a good death... When the scapular was distributed, conversions increased...
