On the fourth attempt I was able drink

On Thursday, February 25, 1858, the 9th apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Saint Bernadette Soubirous took place in Lourdes, France. Three hundred people witnessed what happened that day. Bernadette recalled:

"She told me to drink and wash at the spring… I only found a little muddy water, but I kept on digging and on the fourth attempt I was able drink and wash my face. She also asked me to eat some bitter herbs that were near the spring. Then the vision disappeared, and I went home."

The crowd asked her: "Do you know that people think you are mad to do such things?" And Bernadette replied: "It is for sinners."
