February 13 – Death of Sister Lucia of Fatima (2005)

Sister Lucia and Our Lady of Fatima

Since her entrance into the monastery of St Teresa of Coimbra (Portugal) on March 25, 1941, Sister Lucia, one of the three seers of Our Lady of Fatima (Portugal) always lived in the same cell. In May 1950, she took her solemn vows, committing herself to remain in that community all her life and receiving the name of Sister Mary of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart.

Her last public appearance was on October 2000, in a television documentary showing her praying the Rosary from her monastery in union with the faithful in St Peter's Square. Another nun from her convent who had known her for 52 years, Sister Mary of the Carmel, went to Rome with her on May 13, 2000, to attend the beatification of her two cousins, Jacinta and Francisco Marto, presided over by Pope Saint John Paul II.

Sister Lucia lived a life of recollection, solitude and silence, hidden from the public eye. She would take a walk outside every day to pray the Rosary. Her superior recalls: "Sister Lucia often scolded the little shepherds for going to heaven and leaving her alone."
